We believe that the main reasons come from two aspects:
First of all, high temperatures increase electricity consumption in some areas. In July, the national average temperature was 22.1, which was 0.7 times higher than the normal period (21.4).
Second, the use of electricity in high energy-consuming industries continues to grow at a high rate. In July, heavy industry electricity consumption increased by 12.53% year-on-year, 0.86 percentage points lower than the growth rate in June.
It is worth noting that according to the China Meteorological Administration, the national average precipitation since July was 105.8 millimeters, which is 8.7% less than the corresponding period of normal (115.9 millimeters), which is the least in the past 11 years.
The decrease in rainfall caused the incoming water in July to be 8.7 percent less than in previous years, and the hydropower generation dropped by 11.2 percent in that month. Under the background of a 9.5% year-on-year increase in the total installed hydropower capacity, the utilization hours of hydropower saw a sharp drop of 16.3%. Judging from the hydropower utilization hours in the provinces, the water in the East China region has been relatively dry this year. Combined with the high base figure in the same period of last year, the cumulative utilization hours of hydropower has dropped significantly.
