Gasemi denied that Iran plans to import 14 million liters of gasoline per day. He said Iran’s gasoline production has become self-sufficient and there is no need to import it, but Iran may need to import some raw materials for the production of gasoline.
Iran’s parliament’s energy committee vice-president Nasser Sultany said on the 22nd: “The Iranian Ministry of Oil has ordered that 14 million liters of gasoline be imported daily, but this is only temporary.†Sultany pointed out that Iran has two reasons for importing gasoline. First, the quality of domestically produced gasoline was poor, and secondly, Iran’s largest oil refinery, the Abadan Refinery, reduced gasoline production due to an explosion in May.
In June last year, the UN Security Council passed a resolution on the Iranian nuclear issue and decided to implement the fourth round of sanctions against Iran since 2006. In July of that year, U.S. President Barack Obama signed the Iranian sanctions bill, according to which any company or individual that supplies Iran with gasoline or assists Iran with oil refining and development of oil refining capabilities will be subject to sanctions. In July last year, the European Union adopted a unilateral sanction that focused on Iran’s energy sector. The new sanctions focused on prohibiting investment in Iran’s oil and gas industry and banned the sale of equipment and technology to Iran.
In August last year, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said that although western countries impose sanctions on Iran’s energy and financial industry, Iran has the ability to rely on its own efforts to meet domestic oil demand. In September of the same year, the Iranian Ministry of Oil stated that Iran has already achieved "supply of gasoline" and no longer need to import it. However, the outside world has been questioning the Iranian oil ministry's statement.

Oil is Iran’s economic lifeline and the main source of income, and oil revenue accounts for more than 85% of all income. As of the end of 2008, Iran has proven oil reserves of 188.4 billion barrels, accounting for 12% of the world's total reserves, ranking second in the world. However, due to long-term sanctions, Iran's oil refining capacity is low.
