US researchers recently developed a new type of "spin-polarized" organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology. The improved organic light-emitting diodes have more advantages than ordinary light-emitting diodes (LEDs).
OLED refers to the technology that organic materials emit light under the action of an electric field. It has the advantages of active light emission, no backlight source, vivid colors, and low power consumption. Researchers believe that after effectively improving the OLED luminous efficiency and reducing manufacturing costs, OLEDs are expected to replace LEDs that are widely used in computers, televisions, lighting equipment and many other electronic products.
Researchers at the University of Utah in the U.S. published a research report in the latest issue of the US "Science" magazine. They said that the new OLEDs they developed use a device called an organic spin valve. This device has a three-layer structure in which the middle organic layer corresponds to a semiconductor and the two sides are ferromagnetic metal electronic layers. The organic layer uses a polymer called "D-DOO-PPV", which emits orange light, has a lower cost, and can increase luminous efficiency. The entire device is extremely thin and light and can be installed inside the lamp.
Researchers say that this technology can only work in low temperature environments and it needs to be further refined to meet the requirements for working at room temperature. In addition, it is also desirable to produce OLEDs that produce white light. (Reporter Guo Shuang)
