Japanese researchers have recently developed a more secure lithium-ion battery electrolyte that is not likely to burn or explode even when exposed to high temperatures. Lithium batteries are widely used in electronic equipment such as electric cars or mobile phones. However, traditional lithium ion batteries use extremely flammable organic electrolytes, causing serious safety hazards.
Researchers from the University of Tokyo and other agencies issued a paper in the new issue of the British “Natural Energy†magazine that they developed a high-concentration electrolyte containing flame retardant trimethyl phosphate. This electrolyte is not easy to burn, and can achieve high stability and charge and discharge 1000 times or more than one year, and the service life is comparable to or even exceeds the traditional lithium-ion battery.
The research team pointed out that the electrolyte can increase the operating voltage of lithium-ion batteries from the current 3.7 volts to 4.6 volts, and will be suitable for high energy density and high safety storage battery requirements such as electric vehicles.
