At 15:40 on March 16th, an aluminum ingot production line at the smelting plant of Gansu Dongxing Aluminum Co., Ltd. in the West Anhui production area exploded. As a result, the fused cast plant partially collapsed and production ceased. 27 people were injured in the accident, of which 5 were seriously injured (3 were transferred to the People's Hospital of Gansu Province, 1 was transferred to the General Hospital of Lanzhou Military Region, and 1 had been treated surgically in the First People’s Hospital of Luxi County). The remaining 12 people were observed in the First People's Hospital of Qianxi County, and 10 people were observed in the hospital of Qianxi County. Five people with severe injuries were mainly burns and fractures, and the remaining 22 people had injuries to the waist, abdomen, upper arm, facial soft tissue, and scalp.

After the accident, Gansu Provincial Party Secretary Lu Hao, Governor Xu Shousheng and Deputy Governor Shi Jun, who was in charge of safety supervision, made instructions respectively.
