The UK plastics industry has launched a plan to do more to complete the government's 2017 plastic packaging recycling rate of 57%.
In 2013, the UK recycled 780,070 tons of plastic packaging . If the government approves the total amount of plastic packaging put on the market in 2013 to be 2.49 million tons, the UK's 2013 recycling rate is 32%. The realization of this goal will be difficult without the full participation of all central governments, local governments, waste management agencies, supporting projects and mandatory users, producers and processors.
The UK recycling organization WRAP and partner company Valpak are estimated to wait until 2020 to reach the goal of a 57% recovery rate. Based on this situation, the government is currently consulting the relevant agencies to study whether this responsibility target should be revised, reduced to 42% of the original plan, and the timetable for completion is postponed. At the same time, industry professionals also called on practitioners to adopt various means to improve the recycling rate of plastics, including clearing the policy threshold set by the government, expanding the range of recyclables and improving the quality of packaging materials in recycling plants. The plan was designed by the WRAP Association of the United Kingdom and the Plastics 2020 Organization. Their common goal is to complete a 57% recycling target for plastics packaging in 5 years.
