Patent shows Apple wants to apply fuel cell in portable devices

An apple patent application for fuel cells was exposed on Thursday. In this patent application, Apple describes a way to use a fuel cell in an electronic device, such as a laptop, and optimize the performance of the fuel cell without adding too much weight.

This patent application is entitled "Fuel Cell System for Powering Portable Computing Devices." Apple said that consumers began to pay more and more attention to the use of renewable energy. Fuel cells are technically competitive because they have a high energy density and can provide more energy than conventional batteries in the same volume.

Apple's patent application shows: "Fuel cells and accompanying fuels can bring extremely high energy density and can support portable electronic devices for days or even weeks without adding fuel." Apple also said that the use of fuel cells is facing The challenge is portability and cost.

Typically, fuel cells for electronic devices support portable charging, and users need to carry a fuel rod. In contrast, Apple envisions a fuel cell that is tightly integrated with electronic devices. The majority of this patent application describes a control system for optimizing the fuel cell stack energy flow.

Another patent application by Apple describes how a fuel cell works with a rechargeable battery and charges the fuel cell and the rechargeable battery with each other. The patent application states: "This will make it unnecessary for the fuel cell system to integrate large and heavy batteries, thereby significantly reducing the size, weight, and cost of the fuel cell system."

This is not Apple's first patent on fuel cells. The Patently Apple website stated that a patent application that was exposed in October showed that Apple is designing a fuel cell panel to generate more energy from portable devices. Regarding the fuel itself, Apple's patent application shows that there are multiple fuels that can power electronic devices, one of which is a mixture of sodium borohydride and water. However, these are still in the experimental stage and are not yet commercially available.

One of the major hurdles for portable fuel cell chargers is that manufacturers need to establish sales channels to sell and recycle fuel rods. Apple may use Apple retail stores to complete such work. (Text / Sina Technology)
