Intends to develop high-altitude kite wind generators with stable and low cost

Intended to develop high-altitude kite wind generators

In the past decade, wind energy has gradually developed into a major alternative energy source and has been promoted globally. However, traditional wind power generation is greatly affected by factors such as site and wind speed, which has many shortcomings. For this reason, Italy's KiteGen Technology Corporation has set its sights on high-altitude wind energy and developed a new MARS (Magenn AirRotor System) system.

The MARS system is mainly composed of two parts, a high-altitude dragging kite and ground power generation equipment. The towing kite is connected with the wind turbines on the ground and controls the direction and path of the kite rotation through the aerial sensors installed on the generating equipment to maximally drive the wind turbine to rotate and generate electricity. KiteGen said that although the system is still in the test phase, the outlook is very broad. Compared to traditional wind power, the MARS system has unparalleled advantages: it can obtain stable wind energy from high altitude. The higher the height of a kite flight, the greater the average wind speed obtained, and the higher the efficiency of power generation, and the highest average height of traditional wind turbines is only about 100 meters.

The MARS system not only has the advantage of high power generation efficiency, but also occupies a very small space and area. In general, a conventional wind power plant with a power generation capacity of 1,000 megawatts occupies approximately 250 to 300 square kilometers, and KiteGen Technologies declares that a power plant using the MARS system requires only 5 to 6 square kilometers. The area can achieve the same power generation capacity.

In addition, according to KiteGen's estimates, the cost per kilowatt-hour of electricity generated by the MARS system is approximately US$0.02 to US$0.05, while the cost per kilowatt-hour of petrochemical energy is between US$0.05 and US$0.09. The cost of traditional wind power plants is $0.15.

The MARS system was invented by Massimo Ippolito. He then founded KiteGen Technology in 2007 and is headquartered in Italy. At present, the system is being further improved and related standard operating procedures are being developed. The company hopes to obtain enough funds to develop the first complete model.
