Green fire hydrant unveiled in Xi’an City

These green fire hydrants all use reclaimed water as the source of water supply, and the effluent is mainly used for greening irrigation, urban sprinkling, and fire fighting water.

According to the relevant staff of the Water Supply and Drainage Department of the Municipal Water Affairs Bureau, the reclaimed water refers to the water that can be used for recycling after the sewage has reached a certain water quality index after being properly treated and meets certain requirements for use. In 2013, Xi'an sewage treatment ranked first in the comprehensive assessment of 36 large and medium-sized cities in China for three consecutive quarters, but more than 90% of the reclaimed water can only be discharged into the canal. On the one hand, a large amount of reclaimed water has not been fully utilized. On the other hand, the drinking water supply source in the urban area has basically reached full-load operation, and the peak water supply period will also result in the phenomenon of insufficient pressure on the end pipeline and tight water supply. At the same time, most of the city’s existing landscaping, road sweeping and firefighting water intakes are sources of drinking water.

According to calculations, the city collects 15 million cubic meters of water from fire hydrants each year, which is equivalent to the storage capacity of three Daxie reservoirs, which can be used by 8 million people in Xi’an for drinking for 10 days. In view of this situation, since the second half of last year, the water department has increased the pilot project for the reuse of reclaimed water, and it has already been in the city's first, second, third, second, fourth and seventh sewage treatment projects. The plant built a recycling water utilization project, laid 115km of reclaimed water pipe network, completed 28 reclaimed water intake points, and 15 of them have been put into use, with a water supply capacity of 230 cubic meters per hour.

According to the introduction of responsible officials of the Municipal Water Affairs Bureau, the city will work hard in municipal miscellaneous use, landscaping, water use in ecological landscapes, industrial water use, etc., and strive to use 3 to 5 years for the utilization rate of recycled water in the city to reach 30%. Utilization reaches 100 million cubic meters. These green fire hydrants, which will be “up to posts” in the near future, will open a new chapter in the use of recycled water in our city.

4. Transportation and Packing
